Church of the Advocate was not only the site of the first women Episcopal priests, but the first woman Episcopal bishop once was a Rector in this church- Barbara Harris. Bishop Harris is retired now though she is still active in the Washington DC diocese. She served at the altar when current Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori (the first woman PB) was installed in 2006. Sad to hear that it is in a state of disrepair, the national Episcopal Church offices should step in and do something about this.
I should clarify- she served at the altar of National Cathedral in DC, at the Presiding Bishop's installation. Apparently she heads the Church of the Advocate capital campaign: http://www.churchoftheadvocate.org/centennial.html
